Farmer Time!

May 1, 2026 by Niki Jones

We have launched a new initiative at St Katharine’s; Farmer Time! Thanks to local farmer and member of our parent community Geoff Homer suggested that we could begin a seasonal termly slot in the school calendar where he comes in and shares with the children all things that are happening on the farm and in the surrounding country side. The first of these was two assembly slots delivered to Reception and Key Stage One and then again to Key Stage Two. The children loved it and were so engaged and interested. The designated 30 minute slots had to be stretched a little to make space for all of their brilliant questions.

The second of our scheduled Farmer Times took place at the same time as the calving season began. Geoff suggested a visit rather than a power point! Each class was transported by trailer (seats and seatbelts included) to the farm, a short distance down the lane from school.

Everyone involved loved seeing the calves. The calves loved seeing the children, although I am reliably informed that the calves were exhausted by the time everyone went home.
